How I Make the Perfect Iced Protein Coffee (Without the Sugar Crash)

If you've ever opened the fridge on a hot summer morning and immediately thought, "I need an iced coffee..." you're definitely not alone.

I'm the same way.

But over the years, I've changed the way I make my coffee. Not because coffee is "bad" (it's actually packed with beneficial antioxidants), but because I wanted it to work for my body instead of against it.

Now my iced coffee has become one of my favourite little daily rituals. It's refreshing, incredibly simple to make, packed with protein, and keeps me feeling energized and satisfied instead of reaching for snacks an hour later.

Even better?

Most of the work is already done before I wake up.

My Secret? Prepare It the Night Before.

One thing I've learned after years of working with busy women is this:

Healthy habits rarely fail because people don't know what to do.

They fail because life gets busy.

When something takes several steps first thing in the morning, we're much more likely to skip it or grab whatever is easiest.

That's why I make my coffee the night before.

After dinner, while I'm already cleaning up the kitchen, I'll brew a fresh pot of coffee using:

  • Organic coffee beans

  • An unbleached coffee filter

Once it's cooled slightly, I simply pour it into a large Mason jar, screw the lid on, and place it in the fridge overnight.

That's it.

The next morning, my cold coffee is already waiting for me.

It takes less than two minutes to turn it into a high-protein iced coffee.

Sometimes it's the smallest systems that make the biggest difference.

Why I Choose Organic Coffee…

Whenever possible, I recommend choosing organic coffee.

Coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world, and conventional coffee can contain residues from pesticides and herbicides used during production.

While no food is ever going to be absolutely perfect, choosing organic is one simple way to reduce your overall exposure to unnecessary chemicals.

Another bonus?

Many people find high-quality organic coffee has a smoother, cleaner flavour.

Since coffee is something many of us enjoy every single day, it's one of those small upgrades that can have a meaningful impact over time.

Why I Use an Unbleached Coffee Filter…

This is another one of those little details that often gets overlooked.

Traditional white coffee filters are commonly bleached during manufacturing.

Unbleached filters skip that processing step and are a simple swap if you're looking to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure where you can.

Will using a white coffee filter ruin your health?

Of course not.

But when healthier alternatives are inexpensive and easy to find, I think they're worth choosing.

It's never about perfection.

It's about making simple improvements where they fit naturally into your lifestyle.

Here's What Goes Into My Iced Protein Coffee…

Once my coffee is cold, I pour it into my Nutribullet.

Then I add:

  • One scoop of vanilla whey protein isolate

  • One scoop of grass-fed bovine collagen

  • A handful of ice if I want it extra cold

Then I blend everything together until it's smooth and creamy before pouring it over a glass full of ice.

No sugar.

No syrups.

No fancy coffee shop ingredients.

Just simple, nourishing ingredients that actually help support my health.

Why I Add Protein to My Coffee…

This is probably the question I get asked the most.

Most coffee drinks are almost entirely carbohydrates and sugar.

Even homemade coffee often ends up being mostly flavoured creamers and sweeteners.

The problem?

Coffee on its own doesn't provide much satiety.

If you drink coffee first thing in the morning without eating enough protein, your blood sugar can become less stable throughout the morning.

For many people, that looks like:

  • Feeling hungry shortly after

  • Mid-morning cravings

  • Energy crashes

  • Reaching for sweets later in the day

  • Feeling shaky or irritable between meals

Protein helps slow digestion, increases fullness, and supports more stable blood sugar.

It also helps support muscle repair, metabolism, immune function, hormone production, and healthy aging.

Instead of my coffee simply giving me caffeine, it becomes something that's actually nourishing.

Why Whey Protein Isolate?

I personally use a vanilla whey protein isolate because it's:

  • High in protein

  • Very low in sugar

  • Low in carbohydrates

  • Easy to digest for many people

  • Naturally creates a creamy texture

The vanilla flavour also makes the coffee taste like a café-style iced latte without needing flavoured syrups.

Why I Add Grass-Fed Collagen…

Collagen is something I include almost every day.

While it isn't a complete protein like whey, it provides specific amino acids that support areas of the body such as:

  • Skin

  • Hair

  • Nails

  • Joints

  • Connective tissue

  • Gut lining

I think of whey protein and collagen as two teammates.

They each bring something different to the table.

Together, they make a great combination.

It Isn't Just About Nutrition...It's About Systems!

One thing I teach my clients all the time is that consistency isn't about having more motivation.

It's about removing friction.

Imagine two people.

One wakes up needing to grind coffee, find the filters, brew a pot, wait for it to cool, measure ingredients, and clean everything up.

The other opens the fridge, pours cold coffee into a blender, adds two scoops, blends for 30 seconds, and enjoys breakfast.

Who do you think is more likely to stick with the habit?

Usually, it's the person who planned ahead.

That's why I'm such a big believer in simple meal prep.

You don't have to spend an entire Sunday making 40 meals.

Sometimes meal prep looks like washing fruit.

Sometimes it looks like grilling chicken.

Sometimes it simply means making tomorrow's coffee before bed.

Small preparations often create big consistency.

A Perfect Summer Afternoon Pick-Me-Up!

When the temperatures climb, this has become one of my favourite ways to cool down.

It's refreshing.

It's satisfying.

It feels like a treat.

And unlike many coffee shop drinks, it provides nutrients that actually help support your body.

It's proof that healthy choices don't have to be complicated.

Sometimes they're as simple as preparing one Mason jar the night before.

Those little habits might not seem life-changing in the moment, but they add up day after day, week after week, and month after month.

And in my experience, that's exactly where lasting health is built—not through perfection, but through simple, repeatable habits that make taking care of yourself feel just a little bit easier.
